This picture is of me with two of my dear friends, just having fun together during the service. Wedding 1: The following day, Sunday, was a wedding. This is us dressed up in traditional clothing. Well, more so me than David. David is missing a red poncho to go along with his outfit. Wedding 2: The women's choir just loved that I was all dressed up in their traditional clothing and decided to throw a white vayetta on me yet and have me stand with them in the aisle to sing as the bride and family walked through. Of course I couldn't sing in of the songs in Kichwa, but I had fun none-the-less. It definitely made me feel loved. Wedding 3: Us singing in both Spanish and Kichwa with the pastor, his wife and son. We've been meeting with them to sing on a regular basis and have really been enjoying that time. We feel part of a family. The church just loves that we are doing it too. They always want another song. Wedding 4: (same) Commissioning Service David and Ericka were commissioned for a 2-year assignment in Cebadas, Ecuador on Sunday, August 14.
Dear Friends and Family, During our time in Cebadas, we will be working with the Ñukanchik Yachay School, which is a church-based trilingual intercultural indigenous alternative elementary school. In the public schools indigenous children often become very timid and develop low self- esteem. At Ñukanchik Yachay the children develop strong self-esteem and communication skills. Most of the children arrive knowing Kichwa and Spanish fairly well. These two languages are developed further, while adding basic English, recognizing that this is an important language in the Americas. Teaching English to the different grade levels as well as helping with enrichment activities will be Ericka’s main responsibility, with the possibility of teaching the preschool class as well. Until recently Ñukanchik Yachay has used classrooms at the Belén Evangelical church. It is currently in the process of constructing a new building of its own. The desire to build a new school has been Ñukanchik Yachay’s dream since it initiated: new, larger, well-lit classrooms, recreational areas for the children to play including a playground, soccer field, and basketball court, a kitchen and enclosed cafeteria area, administration offices, and a computer lab and library. David will assist in organizing community workdays at the school, as well as teams that come from the U.S. to help with the project. Maintenance of the school and assisting the school staff will also be included in his responsibilities as well as teaching a “Productive Technology” class at the school, and probably some English.
We greatly appreciate the role you have played in our lives. We are who
we are because of the community we have around us and are grateful that
you have been a part of that. We greatly appreciate your continued
support as we begin this next step in our journey, and hope that you
will be partners with us in prayer and support. November 11, 2005 pictures In Banyos we went to a zoo for injured animals. Ericka is shaking hands with the monkey.[photo] This is me (David) at a waterfall in Banyos.[photo] Banyos is known for its sulfur baths that come from the volcano Tungurahua. The town's full name is "Banyos of the Holy Water." We also traveled with our school's director to her hometown of Otavalo about 8 hours trip from here. This is a photo of us with her father and mother and one sister. I know what you are thinking. We are huge! We had a lot of fun with them. They were great hosts. |
