Peace and Justice Workshops
Bold Speech in the 21st century, Carol Rose & Doug
PritchardThe world is at a historical crossroads as we develop an ever-increasing potential to destroy life. Christians must rise to the challenge of this era and respond with bold peacemaking initiatives. This seminar will explore possible responses, including a focus on the violence-reduction work of Christian Peacemaker Teams. Between God and Caeser: Taxes and the Christian Conscience; Marian Franz, Steve Ratzlaff, Doug Pritchard Though most Mennonites would not fight in a war, all of us who pay our Federal taxes are funding the world's largest military at a rate of nearly $.50 for every dollar we pay. This seminar will focus on the effort to pass legislation in Congress to create a Peace Tax Fund, into which conscientious objectors could pay their full Federal taxes. The peace tax fund bills in both the US and Canada will be discussed. A Christian's Call to Creation Care; Luke Gascho A significant disconnect from the Earth, nature, and ecosystems has occurred for Christians -- and for much of society. How do our faith and valus systems call us back to a connection that strengthens our understanding and practice of creation care? We'll explore issues and applications from stewardship to spirituality. Hunger No More, faces Behind the Facts: Meet the Producers; Burton & Mary Buller What do you know about hunger in the U.S. and what kind of policies could make a difference? A chance to see the hour-long documentary that Mennonite Media produced in 2004 for ABC TV with George McGovern, Bob Edgar, and many other luminaries in the fight against hunger internationally and especially domestically.
