2006 Peace and Justice Group Activities


End the War, Begin the Peace, Sunday, March 19th, 2006 1:30pm, Portland, OR USA
Organizations from Portland's peace and social justice community planning a mass mobilization against war on the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq have announced a full list of subthemes to be addressed at the event. A march and rally entitled "End the War, Begin the Peace" will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2006 in Portland's Waterfront Park south of the Morrison Bridge; gathering at 1:30 PM with the event beginning at 2 PM. [more info] The subthemes are:
     •  Bring All the Troops Home now--No More Blood for Oil
     •  End the Occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan, the West Bank and Gaza
     •  Fund Education, Health Care, Jobs and the Environment, Not War
     •  Military Recruiters Out of Schools; and
     •  Respect Human Rights and International Law--Stop the Torture & Spying.

February 23 - 25, 2006, Annual Quilting Workshop
Our group participated in the 34th annual quilting workshop at the Zion Mennonite Church by hosting a "Peace Corner" which displayed posters, brochures, and bookmarks with information on the Mennonite Church and its peace and justice witness and resources. We included the Peace Pavilion from Pacific Northwest Mennonite Conference in this year's display.

January 20, 2006,
7:00 pm, Sweet Honey in the Rock Concert
MLK Cellebration at Willamette University
Our group and some friends attended this incredible concert. This concert is the culmination of a week-long celebration featuring "Sweet Honey in the Rock". With over 30 years of performing, this acapella group is  known for it social consciousness, political involvment and messages deeply rooted inthe African American vocal traditions. The music is steeped in the  sacred music of the Black church and impacted by the civil rights movement and  songs of the struggle for justice.

Peace and Justice groups invited to Albany event, January 15
Leo Hartshorn preached at Albany Mennonite Church on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006 and afterwards he, Valerie and the PNMC P&J committee joined local Peace groups for a potluck noon meal and discussion about Peace & Justice activities.  Besides enjoying some good food together, we heard more about plans for the Fall 2006 conference, what P&J activities are being pursued by area Mennonite Churches, and gave Leo, Valerie and the PNMC P&J committee feedback about how they can best support our area church's P&J ministries.
    Leo Hartshorn, Minister of Peace & Justice for the MCUSA and Valerie Wideman, administrative assistant for MCUSA's Peace & Justice Support Network met with the Pacific Northwest Mennonite Conference's Peace & Justice Committee to prepare for a Fall 2006 Peace & Justice Conference in the Northwest (date and location TBA soon).

Matt Chandler(CPT), January 8
On Sunday evening, January 8, 2006 beginning with a Peace Potluck* at 6:00 pm. Matt Chandler of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) spoke at Salem Mennonite Church 1045 Candlewood Drive NE,  Keizer, OR 503-390-2715.
Matt Chandler recently returned from Baghdad, Iraq, after being involved with efforts to support the families of detainees and helping to build the Iraqi peace movement. His presentation included stories and insights rooted in his experiences as a CPT worker in Palestine and Iraq. He is a young man who is highly committed to being a peacemaker and who tells his story well.
* Please bring "finger food" to the potluck meal along with your own plates and utensils.
