2007 Announcements
Western Mennonite School’s Fall Concert will feature nationally recognized musician Alice Parker. The concert will be held Thursday, Nov. 8, 7 p.m., in the chapel. It will feature hymns and folksongs plus a community hymn sing led by guest arranger and composer, Alice Parker. The concert is free and open to the public. Soup’s On will begin in October. There has been a change for this year. We will meet only once a month on the third Wednesday through May. Plan to join us for a great lunch and good fellowship. See you on October 17th. David Augsburger will be at Portland Mennonite Church on October 26-28, 2007. David is Professor of Pastoral Counseling at Fuller Theological Seminary and author of the recent book Dissident Discipleship: A Spirituality of Self-Surrender, Love of God, and Love of Neighbor. The theme of the weekend will be “Forgiveness as a Peacemaking Practice.” He will speak on Friday night, lead a workshop on Saturday, and preach in worship on Sunday. More details will follow in early September. Drift Creek Camp’s annual Fall Quilt and Scrapbooking Retreat is scheduled for September 14-16, 2007. There will be delicious meals, great fellowship, and plenty of time for quilting and scrapbooking. Registration forms will be available soon. Our Annual Chicken BBQ is planned for Sunday, Sept. 9, at noon. This is a joint effort with Pacific Covenant. We will be raising funds for Pak-a-Sak. On the menu: BBQ Chicken, Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Rolls, and Blackberry Cobbler with ice cream. Come and enjoy good food and fellowship! Young adult bar-b-que at Craig and Jana’s Saturday, August 11 at 6 p.m. Bring a side dish to share! Sunday, August 26, we would like to have DCC campers and staff share their camp experiences with us. Tony and Brenda Kauffman the new DCC camp directors will be joining us also and sharing in our service. A hymn sing is planned for Sunday evening, August 26, 5-6 p.m. here at Zion. We will sing from the “Sing the Journey” hymnbooks. Mennonite Village, Albany, will celebrate their 60th anniversary Friday evening, July 27, and Saturday all day. See the bulletin board for details. Oregon Mennonite Festival for World Relief barbecue dinner August 11, 5 p.m., at Marolyn and Harley Brenneman’s, Albany. See Gloria for tickets. Reservations must be in by August 3. Everyone is invited to the All-Church Picnic, Sunday, August 5, after our worship service. It will be held in the covered play area at Ninety-One School. Please bring a salad, main or side dish, table service and lawn chairs. Drinks will be provided. Vacation Bible School Report: Thanks to the MANY volunteers who helped make this past week a wonderful Bible-learning experience for the children in our community.
MCC School Kits School supplies are on sale now until the beginning of school. Those of you who are interested may buy extra supplies to go into MCC school kits. Any amount of kit ingredients can be brought to church and placed in the foyer. There are plenty of bags already made that can be filled. Contents (NEW items only)
Young adult barbecue Sunday, July 22, 1:00 pm at Tim Lapp's! Hamburgers and salmon will be provided. Bring a side dish to share. Come enjoy good food, fellowship and Volleyball. Vacation Bible School begins sunday evening, 6:30 - 8:45. Be sure to invite friends and neighbors to come along to learn more about Exedus and the Great Escape. May 6 has been designated "Many Peoples Sunday" by Mennonite Church USA. A special guest has been invited to speak to youth and adult Sunday School classes. All classes are encouraged to participate. Lisa Hughes, a young adult member of Portland Mennonite Church, has been invited to share her recent experiences serving with Christian Peacemaker Teams in Colombia. Her presentation includes a brief overview of CPT, and Colombia's location, population, and sociopolitical climate; followed by slides and stories of her time in Colombia with CPT. Lisa assisted small mining communities in a mobilization after the assassination of one of their leaders, and visited the Opon River communities where CPT has worked for five years. She also visited PMC's sister church for four days at the end of her trip. Please plan to attend this special event. You’re Invited ! Mark your calendars to attend Albany 2007, the PNMC’s annual meeting at Albany Mennonite Church, Albany, Oregon, June 21-24, 2007. This year’s theme is “Living into God’s Future.” The guest speaker this year is James Kraybill. The 35th Annual Benefit Auction for Western Mennonite School is coming up on May 5. Please sign up on the bulletin board if you plan to attend the service and breakfast that will be provided and prepared by the Kitchen Committee. Western Mennonite School’s A cappella Choir and Western Singers will perform here at Zion on Tuesday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m. This is the home concert of their spring tour. March 24 & 25 (Oregon Mennonite Historical & Genealogical Society) is planning a dinner meeting on Saturday evening, March 24, 6 p.m., here at Zion. The speaker will be John L. Ruth from Harleysville, Pa. He will give a digital presentation on “A Contemporary tour of Anabaptist-related sites in Europe” after the meal. The dinner will be held in the Fellowship Hall and the presentation will be held in the church sanctuary. Please register for the dinner meeting by contacting Margaret Shetler by March 15. The OMHGS Spring Program will follow the next day, Sunday, March 25, at 2:30 p.m., also in the sanctuary at Zion. John Ruth will be presenting “An Overview of the Beginnings of the Anabaptist Movement.” See the bulletin board for more information. A Pak-A-Sak lunch is scheduled for March 11. After the worship service interested persons are asked to stay for a soup lunch and learn more about this program started by Pacific Covenant to minister to people in need in Canby. Pacific Covenant have asked us to join them in this endeavor. March 2-4, Young Adult Retreat Young Adults! Mark your calendar for the second annual Young Adult Retreat at Drift Creek Camp March 2-4. All young adults and friends (ages 18-31) are invited. Please register at the Drift Creek Camp website (www.driftcreek.org). February 25 Goshen Colleges's new president Jim Brenneman and Jeron Baker, an admission counselor will be here for the sunday school hour on Feb 25 preceding the mens choir performance. They invite all youth and their parents to participate in a question and answer time with a panel of current students from the choir. February 17 MYF Valentine/Dinner Theatre – Saturday, February 17, 6 p.m. Everyone’s invited! Menu includes: Ham Loaf, Cheesy Potatoes, Green Beans, Dinner Rolls, Frozen fruit salad, and Sour Cream Pie. The Jr. High will be presenting a drama after the meal. Cost is $15 per person. February 10 The 5 th Annual Benefit Concert will be held at Western Mennonite School, 9045 Wallace Road NW, Salem, on Saturday, February 10, 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $8 and may be purchased by calling Jill at 503363-2000. Funds raised are the main source of support for the A cappella Choir to attend the Mennonite Schools Council National Music Festival. Mark your calendar now for an elegant evening of music and refreshments. February 2-4 Drift Creek Camp’s annual Fishing Retreat is scheduled for Feb. 2-4. There’s more to do than fish for wily steelhead during this gathering of families and friends. Come and enjoy delicious meals, home made ice cream, games, orienteering and other demonstrations. Registration forms are available on the back table or online at www.driftcreek.org. February 2-3 “Extending the Table: A Worship Workshop” – On February 2-3, 2007, Portland Mennonite Church will be hosting a worship workshop with Ken Nafziger, Marlene Kropf and Marilyn Houser Hamm. The theme of the weekend event is “Extending the Table,” and will focus on ways the worship of our church can be both hospitable and formative. Worship leaders, song leaders, musicians, are all encouraged to attend. Everyone is invited to a hymn sing led by Ken and Marilyn on Saturday evening, February 3, at 7:00 pm. Information flyers and registration forms are available on the table in the foyer. Gloria will be coordinating the registration, as there is a group rate of $100 for the first three people. The Worship Commission will be paying the first $100. If you plan to attend the Saturday session, please let her know so your registration can be sent. Each additional person can register for $5. Adult Retreat Don’t forget to sign up for the Zion Adult Retreat January 27-29 at Drift Creek Camp. Cost is $40/person or $20/for first timers. Speakers this year are Craig and Karla Morton who will talk about “Rat Races and Transparency.” |
