Drift Creek Camp will host its second annual New Years Youth Retreat for grades 9-12 on the weekend of December 30, 2005 – January 2, 2006.    The weekend will be loaded with fun activities and great music featuring the worship band Ministerios. Young adults will be sharing about their mission experiences based on the theme “Being the hands and feet of Jesus”.  Cost is $45 per person.  Talk to Jana!



You are invited to attend a Christmas Eve Service at Pacific Covenant Mennonite Church.  Pacific Covenant meets in the Seventh Day Adventist facility at 2180 NE Territorial Road (across the tracks from the Four Square Church heading north from Canby on 99E).  The service begins at 7 p.m.



Come to a special “Christmas Soup’s On” gathering on Wednesday, Dec. 21.  Creamy Corn Chowder, Rolls, and Peppermint Poke Cake will be served from Noon to 12:30. There will be live music and door prizes.  Children will be out of school so bring them, friends and neighbors. If you are coming for the first time let us know so we can have enough soup prepared.


Sing Your Own Messiah

Mark your calendars for “Sing Your Own Messiah” on Sunday, December 18, at 6:00 p.m. here at Zion.  Bring your own score if you have one. Invite friends and neighbors to join us to sing or to listen. Please bring finger foods (ready to be placed on the table) to share with our guests at the fellowship time after the concert. 


December 13, Senior Christmas Tea

Canby High School Catalina’s sing

The Canby Christian Church seniors group, Tuesdays Together, invites seniors from our congregation to join them to hear the Canby High School Catalina’s sing at their church on December 13, at 11:45. There will be sandwiches and ice cream sundaes served afterwards.


Hymn Sing

Weekend in Oregon with Lin and Janet Stutzman

Lin and Janet grew up in Oregon Mennonite congregations and have since served with Eastern Mennonite Missions in Germany and on the faculty of Eastern Mennonite University. They have led four cross-cultural semester study programs in the Middle East with EMU and this past year spent a 16-month sabbatical on their boat called “SailingActs” on the Mediterranean Sea visiting all of the ports and cities connected with the Apostle Paul mentioned in the book of Acts from Jerusalem to Rome.

Since 1993, Lin has been Associate Professor of Culture and Missions at EMU. His recent book projected for publication in 2006, Kingdom, Power and Glory: What Christians in Globalization Can Learn from Paul in the Roman Empire, examines Paul’s faith and witness and implications for the American “global empire.” Lin has written many essays on faith, missions and culture and served as a co-editor of recent books including: Meeting Muslims: a Calling for Presence in the Way of Christ; Practicing Truth: Confident Witness in our Pluralistic World; and Treasure in Clay Jars: Patterns in Missional Faithfulness.

Thanksgiving Offering
A Thanksgiving offering will be collected for MCC’s Asia Emergency Fund to respond to the recent earthquake in Pakistan where over 50,000 people have died and 2.5 million are without shelter from the coming Himalayan winter. Envelopes for your offering have been placed in your boxes and extras are on the table in the foyer. You may place your contribution in the offering on November 13 or 20 th or bring it to the Thanksgiving service where the entire offering will be blessed. Please make checks out to Zion Mennonite Church and designate for Asia Emergency Fund or send a check directly to MCC.


Ladies Night Out
Be sure and sign up for “Ladies Night Out”. It will be Wednesday, November 16th, at 6:30 p.m., at The Farmstead (Arrowhead Golf Course). Carolyn Yoder, who has recently returned from Bolivia, will be the speaker. For dinner you will have a choice from three different entrees. Also included will be salad, bread, potatoes, vegetable, beverage and dessert. The cost is $16, which does include gratuity. Signup sheet is on the bulletin board.
Business Meeting
Our fall semi-annual business meeting will be held after a meal prepared by the MYF to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity.  The business meeting will begin at approximately 1:00. Please bring your annual report booklets, budget report and proposed budget with you. Remember to bring food for the food bank. Suggestions: rice, beans, canned corn and beans, peanut butter, tuna, dry cereal, canned soup, 20 oz. bottle of oil.

Sing the Journey:
Here's a chance to find out more about the new resource and learn some new songs. You are invited to a Hymn Sing at Albany Mennonite Church on Sunday, October 16, at 6 p.m. A dessert will follow. Donations appreciated.

A Music and Storytelling Event
On Sunday, October 9, at 3:30 pm, Kim Thiessen, accompanist Darryl Neustaedter Barg, and MCC East Coast Material Resources director Neville McDonald will be featured at a Music & Storytelling event at Zion Mennonite Church. Kim Thiessen is the creator of three Cd's to benefit MCC's "Generations at Risk" program. Neville will tell his life story of growing up on the streets of Calcutta, India.

Penny Power program

Loose change was collected each Sunday during children's story time for Global Change.  Over $525 came in children's pockets, plastic bags, tin cans, etc. and was contributed to the Penny Power container at the Mennonite Festival on October 8 in Albany, Oregon. Nancy Beachy, Mennonite missions representative, and her husband Ken < larger picture> are doing the honors. Hunger No More

Hunger No More:  Faces Behind the Facts will be shown. First aired in October and November 2004 on ABC-TV affiliates, this program features top leaders in the battle against hunger. [Produced by Mennonite Media in collaboration with the National Council of Churches]. A copy of this program is available for checkout from the church library on DVD.

: Theological Reflections on the Atonement

J. Denny Weaver is the Harry and Jean Yoder Scholar in Bible and Religion and Professor of Religion at Bluffton College, Bluffton, Ohio.  He has written a number of books, including the ones we will discuss at this workshop:
Anabaptist Theology in Face of Postmodernity: A Proposal for the Third Millennium, and The Nonviolent Atonement

Questions/Themes:
 - What is the relationship of peacemaking to the message of the Gospel?
 - Why did Jesus die?
 - How do theories of atonement influence our faith perspective?

J. Denny will also visit Salem Mennonite Church on Sunday, Oct. 2.
  On that Sunday, he will lead our adult Sunday School class (9:30 AM), will preach (10:45 AM) and will meet with youths, pastors and members of congregational peace and justice committees/cabinets from nearby Mennonite churches (2:00 PM). Members of our congregation are invited to join Salem Mennonite for any or all of his three presentations here on Oct. 2.   I assume that this opportunity will be of particular interest to people who want to hear J. Denny but who are unable – for some reason or other – to attend the conference in Albany.

On, Saturday, November 5, Bill Gavin from the National Interreligious Service Board for Conscientious Objectors will train individuals from our area to serve as Draft Counselors. Details of location, time, registration pending, but you can put this date on your calendar.
There will also be a public event to inform people on the history and status of the draft and recruitment practices. This event will probably be on Sunday afternoon, but details are pending.



Drift Creek Camp’s Annual Meeting Weekend is November 4-6. Come to see the dramatic facility improvements from the Rejuvenation Project, to hear about the highlights from our year past and exciting year ahead, to enjoy the music of the Corvallis Mountain Boys, to fish, to take part in the auction, to taste the delicious food, or to fellowship around the fire.
